Chamber Music and the Alexander Technique

Date:September 15th – 25th 2005

Chamber Music and String Tutor: John Shayler
Alexander Technique and Chamber Music Tutor: Cat Jary

Course Content:
This course offers the wonderful combination of a musically rewarding experience through the exploration of the Chamber music repertoire, in addition to sufficient free time to explore and enjoy this idyllic rural area of Spain. It is ideal for semi-professionals, students or enthusiastic amateurs who are looking to explore chamber music in a wide variety of ensembles. Applications are particularly welcome from pre-formed groups, but we will endeavour to join individual players together to form suitable ensembles. The exact rehearsal schedule and repertoire studied will be dependent on possible combinations of ensembles, according to instrumentalists’ standards and experience.
AMS is particularly pleased to welcome back John Shayler after a very successful first visit in 2004. John’s vast experience in teaching string players was particularly in evidence throughout the course in 2004, when he not only led the string classes throughout the week and coached chamber ensembles, but also played solos in all the concerts, and even led a demonstration concert for the local schoolchildren. John made many local friends, who are all looking forward to his return. For those who wish, there will be the opportunity to play in a String Orchestra, conducted by John.
Cat Jary will be coaching chamber music, but will also be available to teach lessons on the subjects of tension in performance or stage-fright, combining her knowledge of music and Alexander Technique.
Throughout the course there will be numerous opportunities to stage informal concerts around the local areas.

About John Shayler:
John Shayler was Head of String Teaching for Bedfordshire County Music Service for 30 years, up until his early retirement in 2002. He plays and teaches violin and viola, and, as well as coaching on County orchestral and chamber music courses, is conductor of Bedfordshire Youth Opera. John has also been a mentor for the Professional Development department of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music for the last 8 years. He is a long-standing member of the European String Teachers’ Association, is a member of the ESTA Council, and has recently been appointed as their International Liaison Officer. He has given masterclasses around Britain, and in Arezzo, Italy. He has been the viola player of the Kaznowski Quartet for 15 years.

About Cat Jary:
Cat Jary, the Director of the Alexander Music School, started attending music courses initially as a child as a member of Bedfordshire Youth Music, and later as a participant of various holiday courses, summer schools and Masterclasses. Early in her career Cat experienced chronic pain when playing the cello, and took Alexander Technique lessons to alleviate the pain. The success of this led Cat herself to train to be an Alexander Teacher. Cat’s teaching career has offered her opportunities to coach youth orchestras on numerous courses, as string tutor and Alexander Technique teacher. Cat is frequently invited to teach Alexander to musicians struggling with tension. These include London’s prestigious Trinity College of Music, the award winning City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra and the European Union Youth Orchestra.
Cat has a thriving practice at the Alexander Studio in London’s West End, teaches a module applying Alexander Technique to the Performing Arts in an Alexander Teacher Training School, as well as maintaining a busy life as a freelance musician and solo recitalist.
