Course Content:
This course is intended for string or wind players of Grade 7 and above who wish to take part in a week of chamber music under the tutelage of conductor/violinist Joseph Wolfe and cellist Sheida Davis. There will be an added element in that participants will also be able to take Alexander Technique lessons with Cat Jary, exploring issues such as tension, pain and stage fright, and maybe experience a different level of freedom at the instrument. The week will consist of the following:
· Formation and coaching of different ensembles
· Group classes and individual lessons
· Discussions of effective and enjoyable practice methods
· Alexander Technique lessons
· Informal public performances
The classes will work towards an informal public concert at the end of the week and additionally there will be numerous opportunities to perform throughout the week.
Outside the classes there will also be plenty of time for participants to pursue their own private practice or to participate in some of the many varied activities on offer in the area (see free time leaflet for details).
About Joseph Wolfe
Joseph Wolfe studied the violin in London with Bela Katona and with Gyorgy Pauk, and later in Dresden with Reinhardt Ulbricht. Here he founded the Wolfe Quartet that attended masterclasses with the Amadeus Quartet, Endellion Quartet, Borodin Quartet, Takacs Quartet, Yehudi Menuhin, Eli Goren, Emmanuel Hurwitz and Sidney Griller among others. After Dresden, he returned to London for a post-graduate course with Simon Fisher at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he founded the Johannes Ensemble. Joseph was joint leader of the chamber orchestra Academia di San Giorgio in Venice from 1998-2000 and was also a member of the English chamber Orchestra from 2000-2003.
Joseph is also a conductor and was a prizewinner in the 7th Leeds Conducting Competition. He first started conducting whilst studying in Dresden during which time he founded and directed the Dresden Kammersinfoniker and was also Guest Conductor of the Brandenburg Philharmonic. On his return to London he founded the Nimrod Ensemble. Joseph has studied with Konrad von Abel (assistant to Celibidache) and Jorma Panula (Helsinki). He has recently been invited to the Tanglewood Music Center, made his debut with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, returned as Guest Conductor of the Bavarian Youth Symphony Orchestra and has recorded Elgar`s Introduction & Allegro and Haydn’s Symphonies 34 & 52 with the Munich Chamber Orchestra for the Bavarian Radio. He is Guest Conductor of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama Symphony Orchestra, Haydn Chamber Orchestra and Kensington Chamber Orchestra.
About Sheida Davis
Sheida Davis studied cello at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 2000 with a First Class Honours degree. She has since completed a year at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne with Maria Kliegel and a Master of Music degree and Orchestral Studies Diploma at the Eastman School of Music USA with Steven Doane and Rosemary Elliot. She has participated in the Countess of Munster Musical Trust Recital Scheme since 2001, performing extensively throughout the U.K., and in international masterclasses in England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Bulgaria with the likes of Robert Cohen, Gary Hoffman and Gerhard Mantel. Sheida is an experienced chamber musician, having performed in the BBC Martinu Festival, the Spitalfields Festival, the Conway Hall and Linbury Studio Theatre as part of the Park Lane Group Concerts. She has appeared at the Wigmore Hall, the Symphony Hall Birmingham and on BBC television. Since 2001 Sheida has been a part-time teaching assistant to Wendy Max at the Junior Royal Academy of Music and from 2002-3 was assistant to Steven Doane and Rosemary Elliot at the Eastman School of Music USA. This year she has begun teaching at the City of London School for Girls.
