Tutor: Vivien Mackie
Course Content:
For the past few decades countless musicians have been finding that the Alexander Technique can remarkably enhance their performance ability in addition to helping overcome often quite serious injuries. Under the tutelage of renowned cellist and Alexander teacher Vivien Mackie, this course will explore the relationship of the Technique to music and performance, incorporating the following:
· General Alexander Technique work
· Individual Alexander lessons
· Approaches to musical performance
· Performance anxiety
The general nature of this course means it is suitable for a wide range of people, including professional musicians, teachers, performers, students or amateurs, and Alexander teachers or anyone who has an interest in the application of the Alexander Technique to music. There is a minimum age of 18 (unless accompanied by a chaperone). There will be various opportunities throughout the week for those who wish to perform in informal concerts.
Outside the classes there will also be plenty of time for participants to pursue their own private practice or to participate in some of the many varied activities that are on offer in the area
About Vivien Mackie:
After completing her formal training at Music College, Vivien Mackie spent three years studying the cello with the famous cellist and pedagogue Pablo Casals. Twenty years later, while training to be an Alexander teacher she was struck by the numerous similarities between the teaching of Casals and what she was learning as an Alexander teacher. It is these ideas that she blends together in her own teaching which takes her all around the world.
‘Just Play Naturally’ is the title of her fascinating book in which she recounts her years of study with Casals and her subsequent training as a teacher of the Alexander Technique.
