Date: July 18th - 24th 2005
Teacher: Cat Jary
This week offers an Alexander Technique course specifically for musicians with playing related injuries/problems who are not yet at the stage where they can properly play their instrument again. In order to give specialist attention, there will be a maximum of 5 places. Running parallel with this courses will be a series of short concerts given by the Robinski String Quartet, making for a lively occasion musically as well as socially.
Course outline:
Every day, there will be a general discussion in the group between the musicians, where experiences ca be shared as to how physical pain, stage fright and tension can hinder a musician, sometimes to an extent that they can no longer play their instrument.
This discussion will then turn towards FM Alexander's discoveries about humans' mental habits of endgaining, fixing, mind-wandering, and how these manifest themselves physically.
Every day someone will be invited to demonstate practically in the class - as much or as little as they can - what happens between them and their instrument as they play, so that the class can observe and learn from each other.
Everyone will also receive a private Alexander Technique lesson every day, with or without their instrument, depending on the stage of work, in order to explore further the habits discussed and discovered in the class, and to learn in a practical way not to automatically repeat and reinforce their particular habits - or 'their way of doing things'.
Course Cost: £175 (including daily lunches and parties)
AMS Mecina option: £365 (including course, hotel, daily lunches and parties)
