About the Area
Las Alpujarras
The Alpujarras, a mountain range on the southern slopes of the
Sierra Nevada is in a rare, unspoilt and remote part of Southern Spain.
It provides a real insight into a way of life that has largely disappeared in
the rest of Europe.
Strict conservation laws have ensured the villages retain their original feel.
Mules and donkeys are still used by farmers, and shepherds are frequently seen
passing through with goats and sheep.
The wild and rugged terrain of the mountains, home to deer and wild boar is a
dramatic contrast to the fertile valleys and river gorges.
Peace and tranquillity provide a haven for bird watchers and botanists, and the
sheer beauty of the surrounding area is an inspiration to painters, writers, photographers
and musicians.
Author Chris Stewart has written a wonderful account of life in the Alpujarras
in his books ‘Driving Over Lemons’ and ‘A Parrot in the Pepper
Tree’.
