About the Area
The Sierra Nevada
The Sierra Nevada, the highest mountain range in mainland Spain,
provides a stunning backdrop both to the city of Granada, and to the villages
of Las Alpujarras.
The ski resort Solynieve is easily accessible from Granada, with skiing possible
until late into the spring. For walkers, it is possible to ascend the highest
peak Mulhacen (3481m) from Trevelez. However, this is a long strenuous trek, and
involves an overnight camp.
The Sierra Nevada is particularly rich in wild flowers, and certain endangered
species of butterflies can now be found only in the Sierra Nevada.
