About the Area
The Climate
The Alpujarras benefits from approximately 330 days of sunshine
each year. July and August become very hot, often reaching thirty degrees or more.
The thick-walled, shuttered buildings were designed by the Moors to keep the summer
heat out. Evenings are warm without being stifling.
The rivers and mountains help to keep the air fresh. Temperatures in the winter
can rise to a pleasant eighteen degrees, but at nighttime can drop several degrees
below zero.
Central heating is still a rarity, and in winter there is a fragrant smell of
wood smoke in the air. Storms can be dramatic, and snow falls thickly on the higher
ground.
