Autumn String / Piano
Chamber Music Course

September 19th-29th 2004
with John Shayler and Cat Jary:

This course offers a wonderful combination of a musically rewarding experience and sufficient time to explore the real Spain.
In particular we aim to look at the Chamber Music repertoire of Mozart and Shostakovich, but players wishing to study works by other composers will be welcome to do so.
This course is ideal for semi-professionals, students and enthusiastic amateurs who are looking to explore chamber music in a wide variety of ensembles. Applications are particularly welcome from pre-formed groups, but we will endeavour to place individual players to form suitable ensembles. The exact rehearsal schedule and repertoire studied will be dependent on possible combinations of ensembles, according to instrumentalists’ standards and experience.

For those who wish, there will be an opportunity to play in a String Orchestra, conducted by John.
There will be opportunities to stage your own informal concerts locally. Some venues, such as the village’s threshing circle, are not suitable for pianists to contemplate!

Cat is particularly pleased to welcome John as a guest tutor to the Alexander Music School as John was one of Cat’s first and main musical influences in Bedfordshire.
John Shayler was Bedfordshire County Music service’s Head of String Teaching for 30 years up to his early retirement in 2002. He plays and teaches violin and viola and, as well as coaching on County orchestral and chamber music courses, is conductor of Bedfordshire Youth Opera. He has been the viola player of the Kaznowski Quartet for 15 years.

John has been a mentor for the Professional Development department of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music for the last 7 years. He is a long-standing member of the European String Teachers Association, is a member of the European String Teachers Association (ESTA) Council, and has recently been appointed as their International Liaison Officer. He has given masterclasses around Britain, and in Arezzo, Italy.
