The Tempest String Quartet
About Martin Cropper:
Martin Cropper studied the violin with his mother,
Nina Martin, until he was awarded a scholarship to study with
Howard Davies at the Royal Academy of Music. Whilst at the
Academy he led the string orchestra and the Modern Instrument
Baroque Orchestra and formed the Regent String Quartet. In
September 1999 the quartet gained a Residency at St. James’
School on top of the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire. He made
his concerto debut with the East of England Orchestra, playing
Bach’s Two Violin Concerto. As well as many Baroque
concertos he has performed the Beethoven, Bruch, Elgar and
Mendelssohn and a concerto written for Martin and his father,
Peter, leader of the Lindsays, by Nat Stookey.
Martin currently runs an education programme for string players
in Sheffield funded by the National Foundation for Youth Music.
Martin is Head of Strings at Oakham School in Rutland and
also Head of Strings for the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra.
