The Tempest String Quartet
Sunday July 4th-Sunday July 11th:
The Tempest will be offering four string quartets
the opportunity to join them for an intensive week of chamber
music. The Quartet will be performing on several occasions
throughout the week, giving participating quartets a chance
to observe the life of a quartet “on tour” at
close quarters.
The course is ideal for pre-formed groups, either looking
to polish their performances, or seeking to explore and expand
their repertoire. Individual players may apply, and every
effort will be made to match players to provide balanced ensembles.
The course is intended for semi-professionals, students and
enthusiastic amateurs.
Mornings and early evenings will usually be spent in rehearsal
session. Each quartet will have coaching from either: Martin
Cropper, David Chadwick, Liviu Popescu or Steve Collisson,
working towards a final public performance. (Contributions
will be selected throughout the course by the Tempest).
The course will also include a String Orchestra. These sessions
will study particular techniques relating to string playing
in a chamber orchestra. Amongst the repertoire chosen, The
Tempest will lead the orchestra in Elgar’s “Introduction
& Allegro”.
The exact times of the sessions will be dependent on the Tempests’
performance schedule.
The concerts will form a small local festival of village plazas
and threshing circles. Most evenings there will be a performance
in one of the local village squares, or on one of the old
threshing circles, all of which have stunning mountain locations.
These performances will either be with the Tempest themselves
playing, or selected groups invited to play.
There will be a more formal concert in the Hotel Albergue
de Mecina.
