A Week Devoted to Cello Playing

Saturday October 23rd-30th 2004:

Ian Naylor and Cat Jary will be the tutors for this course. The course is intended for players of Grade 6 and above. Mornings and evenings will be spent either in technique classes, informal masterclasses or in cello ensembles. Non- playing observers are welcome to attend all classes. In addition, course participants will have two individual lessons throughout the week, one with Ian, and one with Cat.

Technique Classes:
The aim of the classes is to enable players to experiment, in a non-threatening environment, with areas of technique in which they may lack confidence.

Classes will include sessions on:

  • Aural awareness and intonation
  • Tone production and colour
  • How to learn scales and arpeggios
  • Fluency in the tenor clef
  • Thumb position in all registers
  • Vibrato
  • Effective and enjoyable practising
  • Playing in all keys
  • Bow control
  • Areas the class feel would be of particular value to study

Masterclasses:
Individuals will each be invited to play to the class repertoire they are currently studying, or enjoy playing. The masterclasses will take the form of a public lesson, guided by Ian and Cat. Masterclasses can be a very effective way of learning for both player and observers. A pianist will be available throughout the week to accompany. (Although it is hoped each participant will play in the masterclass, it is not compulsory.)

Ensembles:
Repertoire to be played will be dependent on the standard and experience of applicants.

Performance:
There will be an end of course concert which will include solo and ensemble items, (contributions to be selected by Ian and Cat). At other times throughout the week, there will be the opportunity for individuals to play and perform on an informal basis.

Ian Naylor studied music at Manchester University, with particular emphasis on the cello. He is currently combining working as a cello teacher for Sheffield Music Service with studying for a Masters Degree at the University. Ian’s particular area of interest is training string orchestras and conducting. Ian is also lower strings tutor to the award-winning City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra.
